Gabriel Craig and Amy Weiks

Gabriel Craig and Amy Weiks pursued a collaborative body of work from September 2009 to August 2010. The resultant jewelry playfully combined their disparate interests in historic decorative motifs, kinetic jewelry, implied narratives, line, and jewelry mechanisms. While sampling many design paradigms – such as the mid 19th century conventionalization of botanical imagery, 1920s surreal and fantastical portraiture, and 1970s-esque found object mash-ups – the combined language of the brooches participates in contemporary culture with references to steam punk, couture fashion accessories, and designer t-shirt graphics. Further, the use of coins and the symbols depicted on them, allow narratives to unfold on the work that make commentary on the nature of wealth, status, and power. Additionally, the brooches are made exclusively from recycled or reclaimed materials.
