Nolia Shakti at Her Studio in Amsterdam

When Nolia Shakti proposed a visit to her studio, I agreed immediately.  While in Amsterdam, where I traveled for a week last month, I met very friendly people and really enjoyed the city.

Nolia is an enthusiastic young jeweler who shares her studio in downtown Amsterdam with two other artists.

First, she showed me the jewelry she has been working on which is based on the theme of feminine and masculine.

She transforms old steel pieces and lengths of chains, combining them with pearls. By creating a stark contrast between materials and colors, she symbolizes men and women.

On the other hand, Nolia Shakti told me of her fascination with Nespresso capsules.  This small element requires much preparation (design, fabrication, transport, etc.) for but a few seconds of use which she likens to gold. This interest led her to experiment with capsules as a valuable material for making jewels that she combines with precious metal.

Me with her necklace

At this point, after she explained how she manipulates different parts of the capsules, she extracted from boxes some beautiful necklaces and earrings that we modeled on each other.

The transformation of the capsules is absolutely surprising, and when you wear the light jewels you feel the forms and colors as a precious metal, forgetting their process.

Thanks a lot Nolia for sharing time with me and for information that contributes to my increasing appreciation for Amsterdam and its inhabitants. I hope we’ll meet again soon. Good luck!

Bona sort!.
