Ramon Puig Cuyàs.
“Utopos” is a metaphor, a poetic way of expressing ideas about the universe and about time. Not a very original subject perhaps, but one that art has continued to query throughout cultural history. Perhaps the way to get closer to an answer is through questions, an insatiable curiosity and the senses, particularly touch and sight. The hand represents a humanizing aspect, the awareness of needing to get closer to knowledge, not to surpass it but in order to understand it. The black plane is the darkness where one goes in search of the light.
“Casitecturas” are receptacles, small pieces of wearable architecture, little labyrinths of memory, taking you on imaginary interior walks. Halls, windows and walls simultaneously connect and communicate, to create an entire building. Floors, trodden thousands of times until they are worn away; walls whose ornaments and decorations change with the passing years, creating layers of colours, of silhouettes, whose still perceptible shadows overlap like memories; rooms with windows that allow you to perceive changes on the exterior from the safe interior, windows that have been traversed by daylight, and by thousands of pensive looks.
These are symbolic rooms, worn on the body as brooches, reversing roles, becoming metaphors. Here the body – usually the guest in a room – shelters the enclosed space, which in turn becomes a protective amulet.
Internationally renowned artists, Ramon Puig Cuyàs, head of the department of jewelry at the Escola Massana in Barcelona, and Silvia Walz, a teacher at the same school, will give a slide presentation which will cover their artistic process and provide an overview of Catalan contemporary jewelry.
